Directed by Ti West and co-written by West and Mia Goth, PEARL is the second film in A24’s X trilogy and a prequel exploring the origin of the character first introduced in X.
In 1918, Pearl is trapped on her family’s isolated farm, caring for her ailing father under the watch of her strict and overbearing mother. Desperate to escape for the glamorous life she has seen in the movies, Pearl’s ambitions, desires and repressions collide as her dream of becoming a star begins to unravel.
Shot in New Zealand immediately following production of X, PEARL transforms the world of the first film into a Technicolor-inspired psychological horror story influenced by the look and heightened melodrama of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Mia Goth stars alongside David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland and Emma Jenkins-Purro.
PEARL had its World Premiere at the 79th Venice International Film Festival, where it screened Out of Competition. A24 released the film theatrically in the United States on September 16, 2022.
